Kindness Cultivator

Chapter 9 – David James

Tell us more about Peyton’s kindness:

My son, Peyton, had such a kind and giving soul.  He always wanted to help others, donate what he could, and make the world a better place.  I remember one time he used his own money to take his little sister on the merry go round at the local mall.  It may not seem like a big deal, but Peyton was tight with his money, and for him to do that, showed me how much he loved his sister.  He also did the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS, and donated his own money to the cause.

How do you share kindness with others?

Every school year, I take 5 or 6 personal days so that I can visit other schools in order to tell Peyton’s story.  I don’t ask for money, just the chance to tell his story and help others. I had a young lady tell me about a club they formed after I spoke.  They perform random acts of kindness in the school and community. Another time, a student stood up, went to his teacher, whispered in her ear, and they left together.  It seems that he had been having suicidal thoughts and even had the knife he was going to use. For the first time in his life, he knew it was okay to talk openly about his feelings, and was able to get the help he needed.

What’s an example of kindness you have received?

I think that any time we get a shipment of hearts, we see kindness.  We ask people to help and they do. We have no budget to pay for the hearts, so the people give their time, and in a sense, their money.
